Research Interests
I am a professor in Nano-Bio Physics at the Physics Department of The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) with a good record for research, teaching and publications. I received an Outstanding Young Scientist award and presidential award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Before joining UTA in 2006, I led the nanotechnology group at Nomadics, Inc. (now ICX Technologies Inc.) from 2000–2006. As group leader and principal investigator, I have won 10 SBIR grants and one regular grant for a total amount of about $4 million. Since joining the University of Texas at Arlington in August 2006, I have received ten external grants and one internal fund from the UT system for a total amount of more than $4 million. I have authored and coauthored 270 peer-reviewed journal publications, one edited book, 13 book chapters, seven awarded patents and six pending patents. My publications have been cited over 10,000 times and my h-index is 52 and I have 27 papers cited higher than 100 times (I100 index = 27). These indicate that my research work truly receives a lot of attention and confirms its high impact in the scientific community. I published the first papers on the thermoluminescence and photostimulated luminescence (PSL) from nanoparticles and the application of these new phenomena for dosimetry in radiation therapy and proposed the concept of nanoparticle self-lighting photodynamic therapy and used nanoparticles to enable simultaneous radiation and photodynamic therapies for deep cancer treatment. This concept has been patented by ICX Technologies and has been awarded almost $1 million in grants from the Department of Defense cancer research program. Most recently, for the first time, I studied CuS nanoparticles and surface plasmon enhanced CuS nanostructures as heating agents for photothermal therapy. My students and I invented a new material (Cu-cysteamine) that can be activated by both light, X-ray and microwave to produce singlet oxygen for cancer treatment. Since joining UTA in 2006, I have graduated 10 Ph. D. students and 9 M. S. students, and also advised 15 undergraduates as well as 15 high school summer students. I have an outstanding research team and excellent collaborations with outstanding scientists at UT Southwestern Medical Center, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, FDA National Center for Toxicological Research and Methodist Hospital and Oslo University Hospital.
