Biography

Biography

Dr. Berthold joined the Department of Modern Languages in August 2016. Since then she has developed and taught lower and upper division undergraduate courses in German Studies, Global Studies, and Language Pedagogy. On the graduate level, she has taught MODL 5305 Methods of Modern Language Teaching.
Her teaching and scholarly interests are closely aligned. She focuses on instructed language learning and teaching, diversity/global learning, inquiry-based learning, and service learning. Current projects are concerned with language teacher education and the curricular integration of culture, content, and language. She has published on school improvement and teacher education initiatives as well as on classroom culture and practices.
Dr. Berthold’s professional experience includes nonprofit and research management as well as teaching in public schools and continuing education programs.
She regularly attends and presents at professional conferences with a focus on language teaching and language teacher education. Her professional service includes appointments as testing chair for the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG NT; 2018—2020), Goethe-Institut language proficiency examiner (2016—), and German Language Society/German Club co-advisor (2018—).
In addition, Dr. Berthold holds memberships in various professional organizations and currently serves on the boards of the German-Texan Heritage Society and the German Academic Exchange Service Alumni Association (DAAD-AA).
