Barbara’s research focuses on leadership, creativity, and innovation that seeks to inform organizations and institutions.  She is interested in evidence-based design, experiential learning, and interdisciplinary work. Barbara is a frequent speaker on design and industry related issues, has served on numerous professional panels, is an author, and been recognized for her work and service to the profession and design education. She is currently engaged in research initiatives relating to COVID-19 and its impact on the built environment and occupants of interior space.

Biography

Biography

Barbara Marini Ph.D., FASID is the Director of Interior Design in the School of Architecture, College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington. She is a passionate educator, designer, organizational leader, and strategist with an eye to the future. Most recently Barbara served as the Interior Design Department Head at Ringling College of Art + Design in Sarasota, FL where she successfully led accreditation efforts, curricular initiatives, and student focused endeavors. Prior to her tenure at Ringling, Barbara served as the Chair of Interior Design for IADT Detroit leading start-up and new program and accreditation initiatives and College for Creative Studies as Department Head, also in Detroit, MI. Her instructional experience includes Eastern Michigan University, the Art Institute of Michigan, Baker Community College in Auburn Hills, Michigan and Boston Architectural College.

Barbara is a Lifetime-professional member and Fellow of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers), IDEC (Interior Design Educators Council), ICC (International Codes Council), and actively engaged in interior design education. She has received recognition for both her design and academic endeavors. Barbara led ASID through strategic change as National President, chaired and served on several Councils and Task Forces (including the Chapter Support Team, Student Advisory Council, and Legislative Codes and Advisory Council), and is a CIDQ (Council for Interior Design Qualification) Ambassador. Barbara currently serves on the CIDA (Council for Interior Design Accreditation) Commission and is an advocate for interior design education.

Her design practice is in the areas of workplace, mixed-use development, hospitality, and retail design. She has worked as a consultant to architectural firms, developers, and clients and has extensive experience in the building industry. Barbara was the principal of Marini Interiors, Inc. in Grosse Pointe Park, MI for over twenty years, prior to relocating to Sarasota, FL where she worked on retail specialty shops and residential projects. Recently, she established Marini Design Consultants as a data driven consultancy.

      The Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) is an independent, non-profit accrediting organization for interior design education programs at colleges and universities in the United States and internationally. For more than 35 years, this knowledge-driven organization has been passionately committed to the ongoing enrichment of the interior design profession through identifying, developing and promoting quality standards for the education of entry-level interior designers, and then encouraging, accrediting and supporting educational programs to aspire to those standards.
      Through a process of program self-evaluation and peer review, accreditation promotes achievement of high academic standards; while making education more responsive to student and societal needs. CIDA engages nearly 200 volunteers, all drawn from interior design practice and education, to carry out its work. More than 170 interior design programs are currently accredited by CIDA, serving an estimated 20,000 students.
      CIDA is recognized as a reliable authority on interior design education by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The CHEA-recognized scope of accreditation is professional-level interior design programs that culminate in a bachelor’s or first-professional master’s degree located in the United States and internationally.
