Research Interests

My current research is focused and based on practical experiments on architecture. My goal is to conceptualize the need of practically oriented research appropriate to the current market and cultural conditions and to the climate of knowledge, as it presently exists, considering design as the essential tools for research.
My areas of research are currently concentrated in three areas:

1. MOP-UD Manual of Possibilities in Urban Design. Current.
Propriety of Small Towns in North Texas. Case Study of six cities in North Texas: Gainesville, Valley View, Sanger, Highland Village, Waxahachie, and Hillsboro, Texas.
Theme: Episodes, Events, Strategies, and Devices.

Small cities seem to exist as viable alternative living environments vastly outnumbering the urban areas. They posses a richness and depth precipitated by a process of historical evolution and the resultant gloss of that which generated the city, its genius loci. A specific sense of place persists, at times latently, but seeming to endure. Buildings identified as landmarks, established places, physical patterns, identity and a traditional relevance to the larger context are qualities contributing to the potential of the small city.

The 70’s and the 80’s witnessed varying states of decline in the condition of small cities. Some have managed to halt and even reverse the trend. A renewed interest, prompted by cries of “small is beautiful” has brought investment capital within reach. People have begun to re-evaluate the alternative living environments available and some have chosen to move back to the small cities, where many others are deciding to give them a chance.

For the reasons of densification of these small cities, the need for a conceptual clarification of order/meaning exists. Theory and strategy of urban design is required. At this stage

2. Low-Income Housing Prototypes in the age of Gentrification.

The price of real estate in North Texas has skyrocketed in the past decade since the DFW area is the fourth largest growing metropolitan area in the country. Consequently, many low-income neighborhoods have been transformed by a tremendous demand for new housing. As the result, the housing has become unaffordable for many low-income families. The purpose of this research to design a range of prototypes for social housing, for possible construction on real sites.

At this point the design of the first prototype has been completed. I am working on several additional prototypes. The construction and use of theses prototypes will be the ultimate test of them to be considered architecture. There are opportunities here in North Texas particularly in Arlington and Fort Worth
area where the real estate prices are more reasonable than Dallas.

3. Architectural Practice and Competitions.

My ultimate goal is to build buildings (by commissions or competitions) to be published in peer reviewed journals.
