Biography

Biography

Daniel E. García is a Peruvian filmmaker and educator dedicated to the development of visual storytelling curricula and socially relevant filmmaking. He holds a MFA degree in Film Production from Ohio University, an MA in Communication from Wheaton College and a Bachelors Degree in Linguistics and Literature from The Pontific Catholic University of Perú at Lima. He is also an AVID Media Composer Certified Instructor.

He has been the adjunct and associate professor head of the video production programs at Calvin College (2003 – 20011) and Spring Hill College (2011-2013). He has also taught courses in Latin American political film history in various universities in the US as well as given workshops on visual storytelling, scriptwriting and video editing in Latin America and Africa.

His creative work includes the documentaries Lurigancho, Drawings and War and The Gift of All, on the struggles of the gay community and other minority inmates in Perús most notorious jail, the violent journey of children abducted by the Lords Resistance Army in the North of Uganda, and the history of philanthropy in West Michigan respectively. His narrative piece, Pescadora, brings attention to the realities of the women living in the fishing villages of the Pacific coast of South America. And his latest short film, Tempestad, looks at the complex hardship in the life of an undocumented family; it touches upon issues of gentrification, code-switching, as well as dignity, family bonds, and work ethic. His films have been screened in national and international film festivals, academic conferences, and has been broadcasted on regional PBS stations and on Peruvian national television. His work has won multiple awards, including The Boston International Latino Film Festival and the HBO New York Latino International Film Festival. He is currently working in the development of his first feature length film and short films shot in Lima, Peru and Dallas, Texas.

    • Sept 2009 Image Journal: A Conversation with Daniel Enriques Garcia
The traveling art exhibition Charis—Boundary Crossings: Neighbors Strangers Family Friends features work by seven Asian and seven North American artists. The show grew out of a two-week seminar in Indonesia sponsored by Calvin College’s Nagel Institute for the Study of World Christianity and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities and led by the Plowshares Institute. Over that period, the participating artists traveled, ate, worked, prayed, and lived together. In the months following, they created work in response to their experiences. The Charis exhibition will travel to ten or twelve venues in North America through 2012 before heading to Asia. We asked four of the participants, Barry Krammes, Emmanuel Garibay, Daniel Enrique García, and Roger Feldman, to reflect on what they learned.

"Lurigancho is one of the most dangerous and overcrowded prisons in the world. More than 7,000 people eat, sleep and wait out their days inside the complex of "Luri," a Peruvian prison designed for 1,600 inmates in the 1960s. Peruvian filmaker Daniel Garcia journeys into the cells and courtyards of Lurigancho and brings back a glimpse of the life within"
