Biography

Dr. Donald Butler received his B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science: Physics Option from the University of Toronto (1980) and his M.S. (1981) and Ph.D. (1986) from the University of Rochester in Electrical Engineering. He performed his graduate research at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics investigating the nonequilibrium behavior of superconductor thin films in response to picosecond electrical and optical excitations. He continued his graduate research as a Research Associate in 1986. In 1987, he joined the Electrical Engineering Department at Southern Methodist University as an Assistant Professor. In 1993, he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and Professor in 2001. He joined the faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington in 2002. His current research is focused on microsensors, flexible microsensors, uncooled infrared detectors, energy harvesting, polymer nanocomposites, and other microelectromechanical devices (MEMS). He has published 1 book, 9 book chapters, more than 170 journal articles and conference presentations, and holds 8 patents with 4 additional patents pending. Dr. Butler is a senior member of the IEEE and member of the Optical Society of America. Some examples of his professional service include serving as chair of the Dallas Chapter of the Electron Device Society (1988-1994), Dallas Section Chair (2001-2002), and IEEE Electron Device Society Regions/Chapters Committee (1999-2007). He also served as the Symposium Chair for the 2001 IEEE Emerging Technologies Symposium, on the organizing committee for the 2004 International Microwave Symposium as a member of Steering Committee, Special and Focus Sessions Chair, and Webmaster. He served on the Technical Program Committee for the 21st International Conference on Noise and Fluctuations (ICNF 2011). He is a recipient of the IEEE Third Millennium Medal. He was an Electron Device Society Distinguished Lecturer (2000-2005). He was a topical editor for Applied Optics/Optical Technology & Biomedical Optics (2003-2009).

      The present invention provides a sensor (100, 300, 400) that includes a thin and substantially flat flexible substrate (102, 406) having one or more sensor arrays (104, 302), a power source (106, 416), an output interface (108, 418) and a processor or analog circuit (304), all of which are disposed on the substantially flat flexible substrate (102, 406). The substrate (102, 406) can be any shape (e.g., rectangular, circular, a polygon, an irregular shape that is decorative) and made from a polymer, metal film or other suitable material. Note that the substrate can be rigid or semi-flexible instead of flexible. A protective layer may cover the sensor array (104, 302), the power source (106, 416), and the processor or analog circuit (304). Alternatively, a protective covering can be used to encapsulate the device. The one or more sensor arrays (104, 302) measure acceleration, force or pressure.

      • EE 5381-001 Ee 5381-001 Foundations in Semiconductors (All sections)

        A study of basic principles of semiconductors that have direct applications on device operation and fabrication. The course covers basic semiconductor properties, elements of quantum mechanics, energy band theory, equilibrium carrier statistics, carrier transport and generation-recombination processes, semiconductor characterization techniques using resistivity measurement, mobility measurement through Hall effect, defect characterization, carrier lifetime measurement and optical characterization.
