Research and Expertise

  • Regenerative Neurobiology Laboratory
Our research focus is in the general area of nerve injury and repair and has the long-term goal of uncovering the molecular basis of neurite growth, axon guidance and target recognition, both during development and after injury. We are developing a biosynthetic nerve implant for the repair of peripheral nerve gap injuries and involved in the design of peripheral neuro-electrical interfaces for the control of robotic prosthesis, incorporating the evaluation of carbon nanotubes as conductive substrates for cellular growth.

Courses

      • BE 5382-001 Laboratory Principles

This course will introduce students to the principles, applications, and design of instruments used in biomedical research, clinical evaluations and other relevant applications. Engineering laboratory data will be acquired from electrocardiograms, electroencephalograms, electromyography and lie detectors. As well as for other relevant physiological functions such as that of respiration, visual and cognitive testing. Data analysis will be perform and the results will be interpreted according to relevant physiological principles. Students will learn through in-class examples, homework problems, and active participation.

      • BE 5300-013 Human Physiology for BE

This course will provide a basic overview of human physiology from an engineering perspective. This course will require you to use information drawn from other disciplines such as general cell biology, chemistry, and basic anatomy. You will learn about the cell and its chemistry, transport and the cell membrane, properties of excitable tissue and muscle, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, anatomy of the nervous system, structure and functions of the auditory and visual systems, motor systems, the kidney and gastrointestinal tract, and the neural and neuroendocrine controls. Studying the normal functioning of an organism and its disease state is essential to understanding ways in which bioengineers can provide assistance through the design of biomaterials and devices.

      • ACCT 6103-001 PhD Seminar

This course serves a dual role: 1) as a forum to present recent scientific and technological topics in Bioengineering and 2), as a practical guide to organize and deliver proper and effective scientific oral presentations. You will learn the basic rules of scientific speaking, practice these presentation techniques and get feed back from a friendly but critical audience. You will also learn to prepare your seminar bio and to host a seminar.
