Biography

Evelyn Barker is a Senior Librarian and Director of Grants and Special Projects at the University of Texas at Arlington Libraries. She has published numerous articles on local history topics and on using primary sources to enhance K-12 curriculum. She was honored with the American Library Association's PR Xchange Award in 2016 for the Libraries' weekly newsletter. Her current work includes finding and cultivating diverse income streams for UTA Libraries.

      Evelyn Barker is an information literacy librarian at the University of Texas at Arlington and former Curator of Library and Archives at the Dallas Historical Society. Her essays about Polly Smith have been published in Legacies: The Journal of Dallas History, The New Handbook of Texas, and Texas Highways. A corresponding exhibit of Polly Smith’s photography will be on display.

      A book being written by University of Texas at Arlington librarians Evelyn Barker and Lea Worcester will preserve Morton's memory along with other notable Arlington names like Tom Vandergriff, James Fielder, Ott Cribbs and Tillie Burgin.

      Barker and Worcester say their book Legendary Locals of Arlington is scheduled to be published next spring and will include photographs with extended captions that are really short stories on not only the city's founding families but on other inhabitants that made Arlington Arlington.

I conducted the interview with Dr. Nedderman, wrote the video script, created the opening title sequence, and edited the video in Adobe Premiere.

      The original Cartographic Connections site, featuring maps from UTA Libraries Special Collections, was lost when its server was taken offline and the original programming was unsupported on the new server. I led the effort to recreate the site using Libguides. The site is used as the basis for classes in the history department.

    • July 2005 to Present Diary of a trip from Boerne, Texas, to Matamoros, Mexico

      This kit includes a digital replica of a diary written in 1864 and 1865 by an unidentified woman who traveled with three companions and a driver from Boerne, Texas, to Matamoros, Mexico. The kit also includes a digital replica of an 1864 map of Texas that has been enhanced to trace their route. There are three lesson plans included with the diary that develop mathematical, language arts, and critical thinking skills.

    • July 2005 to Present Labor activism during the Cold War: The case of Humberto Silex

      Drawn from the collections of the National Archives and Record Administration-Southwest Region. This kit includes digital replicas of letters and court briefs from the 1949 naturalization case of Humberto Silex, a legal immigrant who was active in El Paso labor unions.

      This kit includes digital replicas of Texas money from 1836-1845. The accompanying lesson plan teaches how Texas money reflected the region's identity. Also included is a one-page handout that gives a brief history of Texas money.

      The Upstart Award Committee is charged to administer and maintain the Upstart Award grant process, including designing the application forms, evaluating the proposals, selecting the grant recipients; and notifying all applicants, the donor, and TLA executive director of the selection decisions, and promote the marketing projects of current and past winners, encouraging Texas librarians to use and build upon the winners successful ideas. Term is 2017-2020.
