George Kondraske

Name

[Kondraske, George]
  • Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering

Biography

George V. Kondraske is professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA).  He is also the founding director of the Human Performance Institute at UTA. He received a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Rochester and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from The University of Texas at Arlington – University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center joint program in biomedical engineering.   He joined the faculty at UTA in 1982.

His research has been aimed at a quantitative understanding of the relationship between human systems and tasks from the perspective of performance.  He developed an array of instruments and methods to measure different aspects of human perfomrance, including information processing, sensory, and neuromotor performance capacities.  He introduced General Systems Performance Theory (GSPT) and applied it to the human system to realize the Elemental Resource Model (ERM) for human performance.  This resulted in the development of new performance modeling and predictive analytic methods known as Nonlinear Causal Resource Analysis (NCRA). More recently, he has applied GSPT and other performance measurement concepts to web-based measurement tools, including the commercial product known as RC21X (a brain performance capacity measurement tool for self- or supervised administration)

Research has been sponsored by NIDRR, NSF, NASA, DOE, USAF, NIH, the Veterans Administration, as well as private foundations and companies. He has authored over 250 published works, served as Section Editor for the “Human Performance Engineering” section of The Biomedical Engineering Handbook (CRC Press), and holds several patents. He was awarded the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) "Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Early Career Award", the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation "Becton-Dickinson Career Achievement Award", is a Fellow of the IEEE and a charter fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.

Dr. Kondraske has expertise in human and system performance measurement and modeling, predictive analytics, assistive technologies, sensor and instrumentation design, and measurement systems.

Research and Expertise

  • General Systems Performance Theory

General Systems Performance Theory (GSPT), while applicable to any system-task, was motivated by human performance challenges. For insight into fundamental principles, human system complexity was set aside and focus was placed on simple hypothetical systems and tasks. GSPT provides a first principles, conceptual, quantitative, and hierarchical framework for modeling systems, tasks, and their interface using a modeling abstraction that focuses on the notion of "performance". With GSPT, systems (and subsystems) are modeled as possessing a set of "performance resources" that reflect the unique qualities that characterize "how well" a given system executes its function (e.g., accuracy, speed, strength, endurance, etc.). The nonlinear, threshold-oriented mathematics of resource economics are incorporated, which simply states that resource availability (RA) must exceed resource demand (RD) for "success" of a given system in a given task. Multiple performance resources are drawn upon by tasks; this thus extends to the logical combination of resources; i.e., "sufficiency" is required for Resource "I" AND "J" AND "L", etc. The concept of a performance capacity envelope is derived from this representation, the volume of which represents the capacity of the system to perform tasks that make demands on performance resources that form the multi-dimensional performance space. A task analysis, performance modeling and performance prediction methodology dubbed Nonlinear Causal Resource Analysis (NCRA) was also developed using GSPT. NCRA not only estimates the level of performance in a higher level task (HLT) supported by a set of lower level or basic performance resources (BPRs), but also identifies which basic performance resources limit HLT performance.

  • Elemental Resource Model for human performance

The Elemental Resource Model (ERM) for human performance was developed by combining: 1) the application of General Systems Performance Theory (GSPT) to the human subsystems at several carefully selected hierarchical levels, and 2) concepts of monadology. Monadology dates to 384 B.C., but was formalized by Leibnitz and is essentially the idea of using combinations of a finite set of "basic elements" to describe and understand things with a great deal of complexity; vis a vis chemistry, phonemes in speech, genetic and English "alphabets" (i.e., 4 and 26 "elements", respectively), etc. In addition, the "math" of performance has been shown to be the "math" of chemistry, where "+" means "combined with", not "added to" (mathematically). These foundational components have been studied, further developed, and experimentally explored in a number of contexts (including sports, education, activities of daily living, musical performance, and surgery). They have been applied to define performance measures, guide the design of performance measurement instruments, and to derive new analytic methods.
