Dr. James P. Grover earned his B.A. degree in 1982, in Environmental Science at the State University of New York, College at Purchase. He earned his Ph.D. degree in 1988 from the University of Minnesota, working under the supervision of David Tilman. He did postdoctoral work at the Max Planck Institute for Limnology, in Winfried Lampert’s working group under the supervision of Ulrich Sommer, and at Imperial College Silwood Park, under the supervision of John Lawton. He was appointed to the faculty of the University of Texas at Arlington in 1993, where he has served as Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor in the Biology Department, as well as Associate Dean in the College of Science.

Dr. Grover is well known for his theoretical and experimental studies of competition between species for resources and of ecological stoichiometry, the formulation and analysis of ordinary and partial differential equations models of interacting populations, and the ecological study of the toxic fish-killing alga, Prymnesium parvum (“golden algae”). His research has been continually supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and other agencies.

Dr. Grover is the author of one book, Resource Competition (Chapman and Hall, London, 1997), and over 70 peer-reviewed articles. He has presented numerous invited lectures at universities and conference venues.  Dr. Grover has supervised four completed doctoral dissertations, and over 20 Master’s students. He has provided mentored research experiences for over 50 undergraduate students. He has taught courses in limnology, environmental science, and mathematical and statistical modeling of biological processes. Dr. Grover has a strong interest in interdisciplinary courses and curricula. He has been Director of the interdisciplinary graduate environmental science program at UT Arlington, and has been co-Director of an NSF-funded undergraduate research training program in biology and mathematics.

Dr. Grover has served in various editorial capacities for the prestigious journal, Ecology Letters, since its founding in 1998. He has also served on the editorial boards of the American Naturalist and Freshwater Biology. Dr. Grover has served on several grant review panels for the National Science Foundation, and regularly provides ad hoc reviews of manuscripts and grant proposals.

Research and Expertise

  • Harmful Algal Blooms

Current research investigates the ecology of "golden algae" (Prymnesium parvum), a toxic species of algae that blooms in many reservoirs in Texas, causing large fish kills.

  • Mathematical Modeling of Ecological Processes
I use theoretical approaches and mathematical modeling to investigate fundamental ecological processes such as population dynamics, competition between species for resources, predator-prey interactions, and nutrient cycling.
  • Biology of Algae and other Aquatic Microorganisms
I study the ecology and physiology of algae and other aquatic microorganisms using laboratory cultures, field studies, and mathematical models, focusing on nutrient requirements for growth and the influence of factors such as temperature, light and salinity.
  • Water Quality Analysis
I work with environmental management agencies, assisting in the statistical analysis of water quality data to assess water quality issues and trends in water quality.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Curriculum in Higher Education
I am interested in fostering cross-disciplinary initiatives to train students to address fundamental gaps in knowledge and significant societal problems. I have worked on programs in the areas of sustainability, environmental science, and mathematical biology.
