about me

Teaching Interests

Teaching Interests
My teaching interests have focused primarily on both micro practice and the introduction of social work. I have been intentional with my choosing both undergraduate and graduate practice courses, SOCW 3309 and 5304, because I believe it forces me to be flexible and creative in my teaching approach. I have students at all levels of maturity and natural abilities, thus requiring that I be ever mindful of the various learning styles represented in my classes. Related to the Intro classes, I believe it allows me to share my passion for the profession, my years of experience in various fields, and my fervent belief that, oftentimes, students need as much encouragement and empowerment as they need information about the field of social work. Maybe even more so. And, yes, there are those moments in which the classroom ceases to be a lecture hall becoming a transformative space evident mostly in their eyes, or their questions, or their notes that convey a satisfaction of having found their 'calling.' What a humbling, rewarding place to be.

Biography

Biography

My 35+ years of practicing social work have included juvenile probation, hospice, outpatient mental health, and, hospital social work. Prior to my coming to the University of Texas at Arlington School of Social Work as full-time professor, I was a hospital social worker for over 10 years and a hospice social worker for 2 years. I was both a clinical supervisor and direct practitioner with a Fort Worth outpatient mental health agency (formerly Family Service, Inc.). As noted, my experience as a social work covers a broad range of responsibilities, from management to supervision to direct practice.

Since 1997, I taught at the Tarrant County College, Northeast campus, primarily their Introduction to Social Work and the Social Welfare as a Social Institution course. I also was able to teach in Tarrant County Colleges mental health program, one of their Family Intervention courses. In 2012, I had the opportunity to teach in the Graduate program at UTA Arlington, and in Fall, 2014, became an Assistant Professor in Direct Practice. In my current role with the School of Social Work, I have taught both undergraduate and graduate practice courses.
