Research and Expertise

  • Statistics

My research interests lie in the developement of statistical models and methods for analyzing multilevel and survival data and the general statistical application. My methodological research brings together key ideas from statistical computing (Markov chain Monte Carlo, EM, Gaussian quadrature, importance sampling, Metropolis-Hastings, and Laplace methods), Bayesian statistics (Gibbs sampler and Dirichlet processes), survival analysis (multivariate frailty models, accelerated failure time models, and censored quantile regression) and survey statistics (maximum pseudolikehood estimations). Most of my statistical application work stems from crossdisciplinary collaborations. Working with people from a variety of backgrounds has been an incredibly enriching experience for me.

Weighted Estimation for multivariate frailty models for complex surveys
Multivariate frailty  models  have been used for clustered survival data to characterize the relationship between the hazard of correlated failures/events and exposure variables and covariates. However,  these models    can introduce serious biases of the estimation for failures from complex surveys that may depend on the sampling design (informative or noninformative).  In order to consistently estimate parameters, I consider weighting   the multivariate  frailty  model by the inverse of the probability of selection   at each stage of sampling.   This  follows the  principle  of the pseudolikelihood approach. The estimation is carried out by maximizing the   penalized partial and marginal pseudolikelihood functions.   The performance of the proposed estimator   is assessed through   a Monte Carlo simulation study and the 4 waves of data    from the 1998-1999 Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. Results show that the weighted estimator is consistent and  approximately unbiased.

The pseudo maximum likelihood estimator for quantiles of survey responses
The pseudo maximum likelihood approach  has been employed in  multilevel models   for analysis of complex survey data. This approach may be inappropriate for many survey responses that are   non-symmetrically distributed    with skewness and multimodality characteristics. I developed a pseudolikelihood estimator for quantiles of  survey responses in the   quantile regression  framework.   This approach is illustrated using  a Monte Carlo simulation study and the body mass index data  from the 1998-1999 Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. Results show that the proposed estimator is consistent and approximately unbiased  for both informative and noninformative sampling designs.

Bayesian quantile regression for nonlinear linear mixed models
I proposed quantile regression (QR) in the Bayesian framework for a class of nonlinear mixed effects models with a known, parametric model form for longitudinal data. Estimation of the regression quantiles is based on a likelihood-based approach using the asymmetric Laplace density. Posterior computations are carried out via Gibbs sampling and the adaptive rejection Metropolis algorithm. To assess the performance of the Bayesian QR estimator, we compare it with the mean regression estimator using real and simulated data. Results show that the Bayesian QR estimator provides a fuller examination of the shape of the conditional distribution of the response variable. Our approach is proposed for parametric nonlinear mixed effects models, and therefore may not be generalized to models without a given model form.

A non-parametric approach using Dirichlet processes for hierarchical generalized linear mixed models
I proposed a nonparametric approach using the Dirichlet processes (DP) as a class of prior distributions for the distribution G of the random effects in the hierarchical generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). The support of the prior distribution (and the posterior distribution) is large, allowing for a wide range of shapes for G. This provides great flexibility in estimating G and therefore produces a more flexible estimator than does the parametric analysis. We present some computation strategies for posterior computations involved in DP modeling. The proposed method is illustrated with real examples as well as simulations.

A semiparametric Bayesian approach to the nonlinear mixed effects model.
I illustrated Bayesian analysis in the generalized linear mixed effects model that allows the random effects to have a nonparametric prior distribution, using mixtures of Dirichlet process prior for the distribution of the random effects. The computations are implemented by using the Gibbs sampler; computational difficulties involved in numerical integrations in complex multiparameter structures are solved by Monte Carlo methods. The Examples using real data are given to illustrate the methodology.

An optimization approach for the parameter estimation of the nonlinear mixed-effects models
Implementing the Monte Carlo EM algorithm (MCEM) algorithm for finding maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) in the nonlinear mixed effects model (NLMM) has encountered a great deal of difficulty in obtaining samples used for estimating the E step due to the intractability of the target distribution. Sampling methods such as Markov chain techniques and importance sampling have been used to alleviate such difficulty. The advantage of Markov chains is that they are applicable to a wider range of distributions than the approaches based on independent samples. However, in many cases the computational cost of Markov chains is significantly greater than that of independent samplers. The MCEM algorithms based on independent samples allow for straightforward assessment of Monte Carlo error and can be considerably more efficient than those based on Markov chains when an efficient candidate distribution is chosen, which forms the motivation of this paper. I proposed an MCEM algorithm using samples obtained from an easy-to-simulate and efficient importance distribution so that the computational intensity and complexity is much reduced. Moreover, the proposed MCEM algorithm preserves the flexibility introduced by independent samples in gauging Monte Carlo error and thus allows the Monte Carlo sample size to increase with the number of EM iterations. We also introduce an EM algorithm using Gaussian quadrature approximations (GQEM) for the E step. In low-dimensional cases, the GQEM algorithm is more efficient than the proposed MCEM algorithm and thus can be used as an alternative. The performances of the proposed EM methods are compared to the existing ML estimators using real data examples and simulations.
