Biography

Dr. Subbarao has extensive experience in design, development and implementation of flight control systems. His research interests include modeling, control and identification of nonlinear dynamical systems that are subject to large uncertainties. Prior to his graduate studies, he was a Scientist at the Aeronautical Development Agency, Bangalore, India and was involved in the design and implementation of the control laws for high performance combat aircraft and design of validation tools for testing the control laws. For his work on Model Reference Adaptive Control as a graduate student (Texas A & M University), he received the AIAA Foundation award in 2001. Immediately following his PhD, he spent two years at The MathWorks Inc. as an applications developer for the controls and system identification toolboxes group. Since joining UT Arlington in 2003, he has been actively involved in mathematical modeling of morphing wing and flapping flight with embedded sensing and distributed actuation. Currently he is working on cooperative control and estimation of networked dynamical systems subject to measurement delays, uncertainty characterization in space surveillance problems and design of robust adaptive control laws for synchronization of spacecraft motion for autonomous on-orbit repair and rescue operations. He is an active member of the Autonomous Vehicle Laboratory at UT Arlington and the university representative for Texas Space Grants Consortium. He was nominated by the College of Engineering for the Chancellor’s Council Award for Excellence in Teaching for 2009-2010, President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (Tenured Faculty) for 2010-2011 and was voted as the "Most Valuable Faculty" by the graduating class in spring 2011.

    • Sept 2013 to Present Intuitive Control - A framework that integrates Adaptation, Optimization and Identification

      This work focusses on a framework to show closed loop identification of unknown linear system parameters for a continuous time MIMO realization using online control techniques. Our contribution extends the idea of iterative control schemes which converges to the optimal controller for a MIMO system which is not necessarily stable.

    • Sept 2013 to Present Adaptive Nonlinear Filtering for Terrain Referenced Navigation

      Develop advanced nonlinear and adaptive filtering techniques that use the point-mass-filter in a multiple-model-adaptive-estimation framework to enable terrain referenced navigation for unmanned vehicles especially in GPS denied scenarios.

    • Sept 2012 to Present Modeling and Control of Flapping Wing Vehicles

      Develop governing equations of motion of articulated and flapping wing flying vehicles using a multi-body dynamics approach. The aerodynamic forces and moments are obtained based on a set of non-dimensionalized parameters that are relevant for aerial vehicles. Unsteady aerodynamics, scale effects are incorporated to yield an appropriate force/moment model.

      This work focusses on improving the characterization of the position and orientation of an unresolved resident space object. The approaches uses Unscented Kalman Filtering to solve an Inverse problem to estimate the size, position and orientation of the RSO from optical radar and lightcurve measurements.

        Design of guidance and navigation systems for various aerospace vehicles. Discussion of the various guidance and control systems used in missile systems and launch vehicles. Equilibrium glide trajectories for atmospheric flight, energy guidance methods. Selection and trade-off between various navigation components such as the IMU, GPS and other navigation components.         MAE 3405: Flight Dynamics (4-0) 4 hours credit. Derivation of equations of motion (EOM) of a flight vehicle. Trimmed flight condition analysis based on the nonlinear EOM. Linearization of EOM for a given trimmed flight condition. State-space and transfer-function representations of the linear EOM. Aircraft stability and dynamic performance analysis based on the linear EOM.

This was an important achievement as I coordinated between the Department of Physics and MAE to put together the membership package that was received favorably by USRA and UTA was granted full membership.
