Biography

Biography

Laura Bennett Cameron’s artistic and research activities in Europe and in the United States have established an international reputation for expressive playing, innovative collaborations, and expansion of the bassoon’s repertoire through her work with French composer Roger Boutry (1932-2019). Dr. Bennett Cameron is a sought-after performer, regularly giving solo recitals, chamber concerts, and concertos in the United States and Europe. Most recently, she performed a series of concertos in Italy, to packed houses and critical acclaim.

She serves as the principal bassoonist of the five-time Grammy-nominated Dallas Winds, and performs frequently with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, among other ensembles. She holds the title of Assistant Professor of Bassoon and Chamber Music at the University of Texas-Arlington, and is the founder of La Société pour la Promotion de la Musique de Roger Boutry. Her debut recording, "French Masterworks for Bassoon and Piano," (Indesens Classique, 2016) recorded with composer Roger Boutry at the piano, has been praised as "virtuosic, lyrical, and engagingly musical" by critics across the globe. Her second CD with Roger Boutry, “Encounters,” is expected in 2021.

Dr. Bennett Cameron’s research has led her to publish the first significant articles in English regarding Roger Boutry’s music, providing biographical, repertorial, and analytical resources on the composer. Additionally, she has edited numerous works of Boutry’s and other composers’ music. Bennett Cameron earned a Doctor of Music from Indiana University (principal teacher William Ludwig), a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory (Richard Svoboda), and a Bachelor of Music from West Texas A&M University (Tina Carpenter), all degrees earned with highest honors.

This article appeared in the Dallas Morning News regarding a creative project I played a large part in: a collaboration between the UTA Music Department, The Levitt Foundation Arlington, and Urban Alchemy Wine Bar. This project, a result of three organizations hoping to enrich the cultural life of Arlington during the Covid-19 pandemic, paired discussions about different genres of classical music with a selection of wines. I hosted each of the four one-hour sessions, worked with the owner of Urban Alchemy to choose the wines, and served as the wine expert.

Service to the University

    • Sept 2019 to  Present Program Organizer
      Woodwind Chamber Music
      * Asterisk indicates the event was successfully translated to a virtual medium during the Covid-19 Pandemic

serve as first-ever coordinator of Woodwind Chamber Music at UTA, beginning in Fall 2019.

Using effective recruiting, increased chamber enrollment over 200% in the first semester, and an additional 20% in the second semester

Organize two concerts per semester of mixed faculty and student performances

Guide student groups through all stages of the academic process: recruitment, group placement, repertoire selection, coaching, performance, and post-performance analysis

Work with woodwind faculty members to match coaches with ensembles, based on experience, repertoire, and scheduling availability

Handle all logistical aspects for all student groups and the faculty quintet, including reserving rehearsal and coaching spaces, ordering parts and scores, booking performance venues, scheduling and listening to sound checks, creating concert programs, publicizing concerts, and organizing refreshments

Established “Group Liaison” program in which I work closely with student leaders from each chamber group to maximize clarity of communication, create leadership opportunities, and teach principles of effective delegation

Coach up to three chamber ensembles of varying ability levels, with focus on excellent musical and technical performance as well as pedagogy, entrepreneurship, performance practice, and stage presence, as they relate to chamber music

Formed and coached a bassoon ensemble each semester from 2016-2019 to provide supplemental ensemble, performance, and leadership experience for students, culminating in a commission and world premiere performance at the International Double Reed Society Conference in 2019

In addition to student achievements, I organized the first-ever Woodwind Faculty Quintet. I work with high school band directors, UTA music education faculty, and the faculty quintet to arrange recruiting visits at area high schools, organize faculty quintet performances at Woodwind Chamber Recitals each semester (during non-Covid-19 impacted semesters), and perform at other events, like the UTA Music Faculty Galas, recruiting concerts, and others.

I often organize end-of-semester juries with the help of music office staff, and attend all woodwind juries. For Spring 2020 juries, I led the charge to convert our jury process from in-person to online, and sought advice from my faculty colleagues on how best to modify the process and draft the guidelines.

      Recruiter (Arlington, TX, United States)
      Dr. Laura Bennett Cameron
This activity is neither appointed nor elected.

Each year, I invite 3-8 prospective bassoon students and their parents to UTA. I organize campus tours (official tours as well as and unofficial tours led by a current UTA Bassoon Studio member), and lead departmental facility tours. When the visit falls during the academic year and, the student will either attend a regular studio class, or a special meeting of studio class in which current students volunteer to attend an extra class for the sake of the prospective student. I teach each student at least one complimentary bassoon lesson, and arrange for the student to attend lower-level academic whenever possible.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, limited in-person options are available, so I've invited prospective students and their parents to Fine Arts Building tours, studio classes, private lessons, and meetings via the Zoom video conferencing software.

      UTA Double Reed All-State Intensive
The All-State Intensive is a program I developed as a partner program to the UTA All-State Jumpstart Clinics that were previously offered earlier in the audition preparation process. This workshop focuses primarily on instruction for each TMEA All-State etude, as well as a masterclass on the specific musical and non-musical skills needed for audition preparation, and involves area experts as masterclass faculty, and area directors as mock audition adjudicators. Moving the Intensive and the mock audition entirely online was labor-intensive, but the event was well attended and very successful.

This year's masterclass guest faculty were:

      Oboe:
      Erin Hannigan (Dallas Symphony Orchestra)
      Ashely Rollins (Collin College)

      Bassoon:

*Provide oboe and bassoon students in grades 6-12 with opportunities to perform in and attend masterclasses, learn from professionals on their instrument, discover reed-making, listen to faculty and guest artist recitals, and perform in a double reed choir.

*Provides UTA bassoon and oboe students with valuable leadership opportunities as they guide students through the day, teach classes, and participate in the organizational and logistical work of the day

As part of that presentation, I recorded and streamed Eugène Bourdeau's Premier Solo with pianist James D. Garner., UTA Center for Research on Teaching and Learning Excellence
