about me

Research Interests

Research Interests
My research interests focus on interpersonal processes primarily in adolescence and emerging adulthood. The work falls at the boundary of social, developmental, personality, and health psychology. Recently, I have concentrated on understanding the influence of bullying and peer victimization on physical health outcomes, as assessed by cortisol, immune functioning markers, abdominal adiposity, blood pressure, telomere length, and even changes in the gut microbiome.

Given recent events in our country, I have begun to expand my program of research using this model to examine how acculturative may influence the health of first and second-generation immigrants, with a focus on first-generation unaccompanied minors. Immigrants face an acculturation process when coming to the United States. This acculturation process can include learning a new language and cultural rules as well as trying to maintain old cultural norms while incorporating new ones (Sirin et al., 2012). Additionally, although immigrants enrich the USA culture and provide intellectual and economic stimulation, they often face prejudice and discrimination and deal with negative stereotypes and attitudes associated with their ethnic group and/or immigrant status (Stephan et al., 2005). Along with the acculturation process, there is a level of stress that is experienced. Acculturative stress is associated with experiencing negative feelings and challenges when trying to negotiate differences between the immigrant’s home and host cultures, and not being able to resolve them quickly or efficiently (Berry, 2006; Sirin et al., 2012). While acculturative stress has been associated with negative mental health (Berry, 2006; Hovey J. D. & King, 1996; Hovey, 2000; Sirin, Ryce, Gupta, & Rogers-Sirin, 2012) and increased substance abuse (Buchanan & Smokowski, 2009), there is not much research linking it to physical health outcomes.

I have also expanded the stress model from which I am working to include the influence of loneliness on health outcomes, especially as it relates to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

My research impact in the field of psychology has continued to increase since 2010. My h-index falls somewhere between 14 and 19. According to Ruscio et al. (2012), I am in the 100th percentile for associate professors and 80th percentile for (full) professors in psychology in terms of my impact. I was awarded the fellow status in the Association for Psychological Science for my outstanding contributions in psychological science (https://www.psychologicalscience.org/members/fellows).

Teaching Interests

Teaching Interests
My teaching interests include examining developmental processes, particularly in adolescence and emerging adulthood. I teach Life Span Development, Social and Personality Development, and Adolescence both at the undergraduate and graduate level. I am also interested in teaching statistics and research methodology and have a strong background in these areas. I currently teach graduate statistics courses as well as Psychometric Theory and Methods. I have been recognized for my teaching at the university and state level and am a Distinguished Teaching Professor.

Biography

Biography

My research is located at the intersection of personality, social, developmental, psychophysiological, and health psychology; I have authored or co-authored papers in these areas for Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Journal of Personality, Journal of Research in Personality, the Cambridge Handbook of Personality, Encyclopedia of Social Psychology, and Encyclopedia of Human Relations. I also co-edited a book with Geoff MacDonald entitled Social Pain: A Neuroscientific, Social, and Health Psychology Analysis (American Psychological Association), which provided the first comprehensive, multidisciplinary work on social pain. Current research involves both theoretical and empirical research on peer victimization in adolescence and how some adolescents may be more susceptible to the influence of victimization than are others. I also am interested in the psychology of immigrants - both looking at attitudes toward immigrants by citizens and the acculturative stress experienced by immigrants during the immigration process. Finally, I have begun looking at the influence of loneliness on health, especially as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before coming to the University of Texas at Arlington, where I am currently an associate professor and Distinguished Teaching Professor, I was an associate professor at Florida Atlantic University (Davie, FL). I hold a BA from Nyack College and an MS and Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.
