I grew up in the jungles of Peru (my parents were missionaries). As a child I would play "nurse" with my siblings and friends, so I wanted to be a nurse when it came time to choose a career. My parents asked for a US assignment when it was time for me to start high school, so I attended Santa Ana Valley H.S. in So. CA and found out what culture shock was first-hand! I earned my BSN from Biola University in La Mirada, CA (and my MRS. title the day prior to graduation). I worked in a local hospital in their Cardiac Intensive Care unit for a year before moving to Tucson, AZ with my husband and continuing my CCU nursing. Our first child, Carisa was born there, using the Bradley Method of Husband-Coached Childbirth. I was so pleased with the outcome that I got training and taught the method from my home. I also taught Lamaze classes at area hospitals. That experience opened the door to begin working in Labor/Delivery, Postpartum, and Newborn Nursery at a hospital in Phoenix when my husband's job transferred us there. I realized I loved working with women and infants and have done so in clinical settings, OB/Gyn MD offices and Public Health settings ever since. My husband's job moved us to Colorado, where we lived 22 years. During that time I enjoyed working for the Nurse Family Partnership program with underserved high-risk mothers as a Nurse Home Visitor for 7 years, carrying a caseload of 25 clients through their pregnancy and up to their child's 2nd birthday. I began helping teach clinical rotations for Arapahoe Community College's Nursing Program part-time and was recruited to join the team of 8 other instructors for the Nursing Program. I was encouraged to earn my Masters degree, which I did, at Regis University in Denver. The experience was so energizing! A surprise life change moved me to Dallas in the summer of 2011 and I had to choose between Tarrant County Community College and UTA, since both offered me a job teaching Nursing. I have completed four years of teaching BSN students at UTA now--most of it conducting OB clinical rotations at Baylor All Saints, Harris Fort Worth, and Harris Hurst Euless Bedford. I love OB and really enjoy sharing my passion with the future nurses of tomorrow in UTA's distinguished Nursing Program!
