Biography

Dr. Melanie Sattler has been a full-time faculty member in Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington for 13 years. She teaches courses related to sustainable engineering, solid waste management, and air quality. Her current research focuses on sustainable energy from waste (landfill gas and biogas), mitigating landfill emissions, and life cycle environmental analysis. She and her students have published over 100 peer-reviewed conference proceeding and journal papers.

Prior to joining UTA, she worked in environmental positions in consulting (Alan Plummer Associates, one and a half years) and local government (North Central Texas Council of Governments, 5 years). She received her Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas.

Research and Expertise

  • Sustainable energy from waste (landfill gas and biogas), landfill emissions, life cycle analysis

    My current research focuses on:

    1) Sustainable energy from waste and landfill emissions, with the following goals:

       - Increase landfill gas production as a renewable energy resource,

       - Increase biogas production from other waste systems (e.g. industrial waste, household waste), as renewable energy resources,

       - Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, using waste materials as alternative landfill covers.

    2) Life cycle environmental analysis.
