Michael Vasilyev received the M.S. degree (diploma) summa cum laude in Applied Mathematics and Physics from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Russia, in 1993, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, in 1999.
His research at Lebedev Physics Institute (Moscow, Russia) in 1993-1994 and subsequent doctoral work at Northwestern University were on quantum properties of novel optical amplifiers and solitons in optical fibers, including development of homodyne tomography of multimode quantum states and first experimental demonstrations of noiseless fiber amplifier and noiseless amplification of images.
After joining Corning Inc.'s Photonic Research and Test Center (Somerset, NJ) as a Senior Research Scientist in 1999, he performed experimental and theoretical studies of fiber transmission issues, noise and nonlinearities in Raman and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), and architectures for ultra-long-haul dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) networks.
In 2003 he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Texas at Arlington. Prof. Vasilyev’s research interests include novel optical amplifiers, nonlinear-optical signal processing, quantum communications, and nanophotonics.
Dr. Vasilyev was a recipient of 2008 DARPA Young Faculty Award, 2019 UTA Outstanding Research Achievement or Creative Accomplishment Award, and became a member of the UTA Academy of Distinguished Scholars in 2020. He has published 59 journal and over 175 conference papers, and holds 10 U.S. and 3 international patents.
Dr. Vasilyev was a co-Chair of the 2014 and 2015 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meetings on Nonlinear-Optical Signal Processing. He served as a Chair and Vice-Chair of Quantum Optics Technical Group of Quantum Electronics Division of the Optical Society of America (OSA). He is a co-founder and past Chair of the Fort Worth Chapter of the IEEE Photonics Society (formerly known as LEOS). He served as an Associate Editor for IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology and as the Primary Guest Editor of 2008 and 2012 "Nonlinear-Optical Signal Processing" special issues of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics. He has been a member or a chair of the technical program committees for the Optical Fiber Communication conference (2015-2018, 2020-present), Photonics West conference (2014-2019), Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (2005-2007, 2013-2017), Frontiers in Optics conference (2005-2008 and 2016-2017), and OSA's Optical Amplifiers and their Applications (OAA) conference (2002-2004). He served as a president of the OSA Student Chapter at Northwestern University in 1998-1999 and as a principal organizer of the 2nd Midwest Regional Meeting of the OSA Student Chapters in 1998. Dr. Vasilyev is a faculty co-advisor of the OSA Student Chapter at the UTA. He is a Fellow of the OSA and SPIE and a Senior Member of the IEEE Photonics and Communication Societies.
