Biography

Dr. Aswath has over twenty five years of experience in the area of processing of advanced materials that include monolithic and composite materials. In addition he has over 20 years of experience in the area of deformation, fatigue and fracture of specialty engineering materials. His work in the area of synthesis of materials involves the design of new materials using fundamental concepts in chemistry, thermodynamics and material science. 

He is currently working with Rebirth Partners and The State of Texas on a major initiative to develop a new class of environmentally friendly high performance lubricant additives for internal combustion engines and high load bearing lubrication application. Dr. Aswath has been also been  working with various automotive OEM’s such as General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Nissan Motors, Oil and Grease additive companies such as Exxon-Mobil, Chevron-Oronite, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Afton, Lubrizol, DuPont Chemicals, DOW Chemicals,  RT Vanderbilt, and Whitmores and National Labs such as Argonne National Labs , AC2T (Wiener-Neusdtadt in Austria)  and LTDS (Ecole Centrale de Lyon).

A second major initiative that Dr. Aswath is currently involved in is the development of biocompatible materials for applications ranging from structural orthopedic, tissue regeneration and drug delivery applications. These projects involve active collaboration with faculty in the Bioengineering Department and have resulted in the development of 3D porous degradable polymeric scaffolds for drug delivery applications, ceramic scaffolds for smooth muscle cell culture and porous scaffolds for tissue engineering. In addition, scaffolds for drug delivery applications have been developed. In an related initiative Dr. Aswath is examining the processing and evaluation of a new generation Bioglass/Polymer composite for orthopedic application. In addition he is examining new methods to coat hydroxyapatite and Bioglass on Ti substrates for improved fixation with bone. More recently studies have focussed on the development of devices with thermoresponsive hydrogels for drug delivery applications. A fundamental study involving the mechanism of bone remodeling the focus of some current studies. Several aspects of this project are collaborative efforts with faculty in bioengineering, mechanical engineering, Baylor college of Dentistry and Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

A third major initiative is in the development of sustainable concrete for structural and transportation applications. This involves the use of recycled tire materials as replacement for both coarse and fine aggregates in concrete. The finished product exhibits properties equal to or  better than traditional concrete with the simultaneous use of recycled materials that would otherwise find their way into landfills. An additional area of interest is in the development of concrete reinforced with bamboo for applications where steel reinforcements are unavailable. This area of research has been a collaborative effort with faculty in Civil engineering.

In the past he has been involved in the development and evaluation of a new generation of titanium aluminides for jet engine applications. He has worked extensively in synthesis, phase transformations and mechanical properties of in-situ Si3N4 reinforced barium aluminosilicate in collaboration with Loral Corp (Lockheed Martin Corporation). A research program evaluating the role of processing variables on the electrical and mechanical properties of Blackglas™ matrix composites with  Nicalon™ and Nextel™ fibers was completed in collaboration with Allied Signal and Vought Aircraft Company. He has also completed NSF sponsored project to study the effects of silica additions on the creep and fracture properties of alumina based ceramics. In addition he has worked in microstructural stability and oxidation characteristics of high temperature intermetallics. Dr. Aswath has worked closely with McDonnell Douglas Research Labs, Oak Ridge National Labs, ALCOA Research Labs, Vought Corp., Loral Vought Corp., MCI Telecommunications, National Oilwell, General Dynamics, ,Lockheed Fort. Worth Company, Allied Signal and MULCOA Research Labs on research projects. He has also worked on research projects with faculty in Ohio State University, Brown University, University of Trento, Ecole Centrale de Lyon  and Indian Institute of Science among others.

      Achievements:

      Every year graduate students are encouraged to submit nominations in support of their nominees for the Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring Award. A total of 5 support letters have to be provided and when part of a short list, the nominees have to write a 3 page essay on their mentoring philosophy. The award is based on the success of the mentor's students and the ability of the mentor to provide effective mentorship.

    • Materials Paper Receives Top Award
      The National Lubricating Grease Institute recently presented its Clarence E. Earle Memorial Award to Vice President for Research Dr. Ron Elsenbaumer and Materials Science & Engineering Professor Pranesh Aswath for a paper they wrote, “Development of a High Performance, Low Molybdenum Disulfide Grease.” Dr. Aswath presented the paper at the Institute’s annual meeting last year. It is the highest technical award that the National Lubrication and Grease Institute bestows, given to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the literature of lubricating greases.

      • May 2013 Engine oil additive
        A process and method for manufacturing an improved engine oil comprising mixing ferric fluoride with ZDDP to form an additive mixture, heating the additive mixture to at least 125.degree. C. for at least 4 hours to produce a pre-reacted mixture, and adding the pre-reacted mixture to a fully formulated engine oil not containing ZDDP. Also disclosed is an engine oil prepared by a process comprising mixing catalyst with ZDDP to form an additive mixture, heating the additive mixture to about 60.degree. C. to produce a pre-reacted additive mixture, and adding the pre-heated additive mixture to a fully formulated engine oil not containing ZDDP.

        A lubricant additive produced by the process comprising mixing a metal halide with an organophosphate, the metal halide participating as a reactant and reacting the metal halide and the organophosphate to produce a reaction mixture comprising the lubricant additive.         A method for forming in-situ a fluorinated organic compound or polymer film from the friction-induced reaction of an organic material, such as zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP), and a fluoridated material, such as iron fluoride (FeF.sub.3) on or in proximity to a wear surface substrate. Also disclosed is a method for producing a lubricated wear surface by frictionally reacting an organic material and a fluoridated material near a wear surface, where the reaction product is a fluorinated organic compound bonded to the wear surface.

        Disclosed are methods for preparing lubricant additives and lubricants by reacting together organophosphate compounds and fluorine compounds, the fluorine compound participating in the reaction as a reactant. Research and Expertise

  • PROCESSING, PHASE TRANSFORMATIONS AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF MONOLITHIC CERAMICS AND CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITES
    Research is currently focused on monolithic alumina-silica ceramics and barium alumino silicate-silicon nitride composites and Blackglas? matrix ceramic fabric composites. The role of processing parameters like volume fraction of constituent phases, temperature and time of processing are studied in the context of phase transformations and mechanical properties. Tools like x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis are used to study the phase transformations. Mechanical properties like fatigue, fracture toughness, flexure and creep are also being studied in the context of processing variables and phenemological models.
  • MICROSTRUCTURAL STABILITY, OXIDATION CHARACTERISTICS, FATIGUE AND CREEP OF TITANIUM INTERMETALLICS AND TITANIUM MATRIX COMPOSITES
    Research is currently focused on the effects of long-term exposures at elevated temperatures on microhardness, coarsening of phases, grain growth and oxidation kinetics of binary and ternary intermetallics based on TiAl. Continuous fiber composites based on b-21s with SCS-6 fibers are being studied in the context of creep, oxidation resistance and interface stability. Fatigue and fracture of intermetallics and intermetallic matrix composites. Tools such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Auger electron microscopy and electron microprobe are used in this study.
  • PROCESSING AND PROPERTIES OF BIOACTIVE MATERIALS
    Research is currently focused on the following projects: (i) Development of bioactive Hydroxyapatite-Bioglas composites for orthopedic applications and (ii) Development of UHMWPE-HA composites for orthopedic applications.  (iii) Microwave synthesis of Biopolymers (iv) Development of 3D interconnected scaffolds for Drug Delivery and Tissue Culture Applications.(v) Understanding the mechanism of ischemic necrosis in femoral head (vi) Mechanism of bone remodeling in DMP-1 deficient and wild type mice. The hydroxyapatite-Bioglass composites are being developed with the intent to elicit the formation of hydroxyapatite on the surface of the implant and improve the strength of the bond between the bone and the implant. The UHMWPE-HA composites are being developed with HA as a reinforcement and bioactive component of the composite.Microwave sythesis is an improved way of processing polymers that reduces processing time and enhances control on molecular weight and extent of cross linking and crystallinity. The 3D porous scaffolds are two phase biopolymers that can be tailored with one phase eluting the drug and the other phase providing structural stability. The study of ischemic necrosis is focused on understanding the mechanism by which bone remodels when blood supply is cut off to the femoral head of pigs. The study on DMP-1 deficient and wild type mice involves the use of XANES and micro CT to examine the structure of bone in the presence and absence of DMP-1 protein
  • TRIBOLOGY AND LUBRICATION
    Research is currently focused in the following areas (i) Development of high performance ashless anti wear additives for lubrication in engines, drive train and automatic transmissions. The goal of this effort is to develop high performance, low friction and anti-wear additives that can result in improved fuel economy and longer drain interval. In addition, reduced P and S deposits can lead to improved lives of catalytic converters and reduced emissions.  (ii) Development of high performance universal greases: The goal of this project is to develop greases that have improved wear and lower friction at loads and excellent weld loads for extreme pressure protection. (iii) Understanding the mechanism by which wear occurs in diesel engines from soot from exhaust gas recirculation. These studies have focused on developing an understanding of the mechanism of wear in the presence of diesel soot and its relationship to the chemistry on the surface of soot (iv) Development of low friction, anti-corrosion coatings: The goal of this project is to develop fluorocarbon coatings on various surfaces by a low temperature process where  a nano-catalyst was developed that assisted in deposition of PTFE on surfaces. Applications include anti-corrosion and anti-icing applications.
  • MATERIALS FOR CIVIL ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS
    Research is currently focused on development sustainable materials for structural civil engineering applications. Applications include development of super-elastic NiTi connection rods for earthquake resistant structures, bamboo reinforced concrete for structural applications and tire derived aggregates as replacement for large aggregates in concrete and asphalt applications. The primary focus of these studies is in the development of sustainable materials for structural applications.

      • MSE 5315-001 Fatigue of Materials
        Fatigue failures occur in many ways. Fluctuations in externally applied stresses or strains results in mechanical fatigue. Cyclic loads associated with high temperatures cause creep-fatigue. When both temperature and load fluctuate we have thermo-mechanical fatigue. Cyclic loading in a corrosive media causes corrosion fatigue. The course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the fatigue process in materials and should appeal to a wide audience. This course will employ theoretical and practical examples. An understanding of the fatigue mechanisms can help us to answer some of the following questions 1) Why does fatigue occur? 2) How can we understand the development of damage due to fatigue? 3) What is the mechanism of fatigue crack growth? 4) How can we design components to minimize fatigue failures?
