Biography

Dr. Sergio Espinosa Mexican conductor and violinist, Sergio Espinosa is the Music Director of the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving and also Associate Professor at the University of Texas Arlington. He combines his time here with his position as Principal Examiner for the International Baccalaureate Organization in Wales, UK. He also maintains an active schedule as a clinician in Texas and beyond. Dr. Espinosa studied at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the Conservatoire de Neuchâtel, Switzerland (Diplôme de Capacité Professionnelle de Violon), Ithaca College, New York, (Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting), and received his DMA in Orchestra Conducting from the University of Iowa. His activities as orchestral conductor include Music Director with the Shoals Symphony Orchestra, Florence, Alabama; assistant conductor with the Orchestre de L'Université de Fribourg, Switzerland; and assistant conductor with the Orchestre Philharmonique Rhodanien, Tournon, France. He has also guest-conducted the Las Colinas-Arlington-Garland Symphony, Rome Festival Orchestral, Rome, Italy; the Orquesta Sinfónica de Nuevo León; the Orquesta Sinfónica de Michoacán; the Orquesta Sinfónica de Guanajuato; Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional; and the Orquesta de Cámara de Bellas Artes in México. As a violinist, Dr. Espinosa has been a member of the string quartet Boccherini in Spain and has played with many orchestras, including Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Mexico, Orchestre de Chambre de Neuchâel in Switzerland, Orchestre Municipal de Besançon in France, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada in Spain, Orquesta Do Norte de Portugal, and Fredonia Chamber Players, Cedar Rapids Symphony, and Quad-City Orchestra in the United States. In addition to his activity as conductor and violinist, Dr. Espinosa has developed research surrounding the film music of Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas. His doctoral dissertation: “Silvestre Revueltas's Film Music for Redes (1935) vis-à-vis the Hollywood Conventions of That Time” has been discussed in specialized forums such as the “Symposium about Revueltas’s film music organized by the Los Angeles Cinematheque”, The Symposium of Researchers at the Center for Mexican American studies at the University of Texas at Arlington and the work by Antonia Vondrak from the University of Vienna, Austria. His activities as music educators have led him to led workshops in French, Spanish, and English in such as Rice University in Houston, and many cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Hong Kong, Denver, Winnipeg, Pittsburgh, Albuquerque, Calgary, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Houston, Columbus, etc.

        The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (http://www.ibo.org/ ) has established itself as the international benchmark for pre-college curriculum and serves as a primary entrance qualification for universities around the world. Similar to the American Advanced Placement program (AP), many universities in the United States recognize and offer college-credit for students with an IB diploma. However, contrary to the AP program, the IB diploma is also recognized by many universities worldwide. More and more American high schools apply to the IB. My role as Principal Examiner in several components has encompassed responsibilities in four main areas: 1) design and assessment of the music exam; 2) supervision of a team of around 90 music examiners worldwide; 3) training of music educators around the world; and 4) communication with the staff of the IBO, from the Director General in Geneva, to the Subject Area Managers in Cardiff. Some of the qualifications necessary for this position include: a terminal degree in music, a full-time university position, excellent communication skills, fluency in several languages, and awareness and sensitivity to multicultural matters. In order to maintain that reputation, it is necessary that its examination process keeps high standards. Unannounced Inspections are intended to verify the examination process. They consist of visits to schools where the inspector arrives just few minutes before an exam begins. The inspector’s duty consists on verifying that the conditions of the exam follow the strict IB rules. For instance, all students must face on the same direction, there must be 1.5 meters of distance between each student, if a student leaves the room during the exam he/she must be accompanied by a chaperone, there must be at least one invigilator for each 25 students, etc. During the May exam season I visited 7 schools in Chicago.       The College of Liberal Arts’ Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEAs) Committee works to celebrate and promote inclusion, diversity, equity, and access within the College of Liberal Arts.

      The CoLA IDEAs Committee strives to include, support, and listen to the voices of every member of our community, whether students, staff, faculty, or alumni. As an advisory committee, our primary charge centers on developing equitable support for an inclusive, diverse community that is accessible to all stakeholders. 

      Working in collaboration with those stakeholders, the CoLA Dean's office, and with DEI committees in CoLA departments, other colleges, and at the university level, the IDEAs Committee identifies areas for improvement and proposes curricular, research, programmatic, policy, and community engagement initiatives, among others.

      We value multiple perspectives and embrace excellence through diversity of all kinds, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sex, sexual orientation, disability and neurodiversity, size, socioeconomic status, religion, age, veteran status, immigration status, Indigenous status, and national origin.

      I am part of a group of officers that review cases related to student misconduct. In general, this involves reviewing student and witnesses statements, police reports, recorded hearings, legal procedures, etc. In the end, based on the evidence presented to me, I approve, reject, or modify the original disciplinary decision appealed.

      Inspire for Faculty
      Inspire for Faculty is a powerful addition to UTA’s arsenal of teaching tools, equipping faculty more than ever to be totally engaged with our students. Having up-to-date student engagement data from the Learning Management System (LMS), Canvas, readily available, gives faculty the opportunity to identify students who may be struggling at an early stage. Acting on this information, faculty will have the ability to assist and encourage students so they successfully complete their courses.

    • 2018 to  Present CANVAS "Champion"
      CANVAS
      During the year 2018-2019 UTA adopted CANVAS as a platform to deliver course content. I was part of a group of people that became 'champions' for different departments. My role included taking several seminars and online workshops to become acquainted with the system. Update the Music Department with information about the transition. Monitor members of the Music Department that took the introductory workshop to CANVAS, designing and offering a Pilot Course (MUSI 1300-004) and serve as the liaison between the Music Department and the CANVAS Migration Team.
      Since the year 2019-2020, I offer assistance to colleagues to navigate this platform.

      This group, led by Dr. Rebecca Lewis, coordinate aspects from UEP, SACSCOC, Surveys, and Core Objective Assessment and Scoring Day. This group discusses matters related to assessment at a university level.

      This committee reviewed applications of courses to be approved as part of the UTA Core Curriculum. During Spring 2019 the committee has gathered information and discussed the possibility to modify the UTA Math load from 9h to 6h. This is still an ongoing evaluation. Some of the activity of the chair person is not limited to the 9 months of academic calendar.

      The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (http://www.ibo.org/ ) has established itself as the international benchmark for pre-college curriculum and serves as a primary entrance qualification for universities around the world. Similar to the American Advanced Placement program (AP), many universities in the United States recognize and offer college-credit for students with an IB diploma. However, contrary to the AP program, the IB diploma is also recognized by many universities worldwide. More and more American high schools apply to the IB. My role as Principal Examiner in several components has encompassed responsibilities in four main areas: 1) design and assessment of the music exam; 2) supervision of a team of around 90 music examiners worldwide; 3) training of music educators around the world; and 4) communication with the staff of the IBO, from the Director General in Geneva, to the Subject Area Managers in Cardiff. Some of the qualifications necessary for this position include: a terminal degree in music, a full-time university position, excellent communication skills, fluency in several languages, and awareness and sensitivity to multicultural matters.

In order to maintain that reputation, it is necessary that its examination process keeps high standards. Unannounced Inspections are intended to verify the examination process. They consist of visits to schools where the inspector arrives just few minutes before an exam begins. The inspector’s duty consists on verifying that the conditions of the exam follow the strict IB rules. For instance, all students must face on the same direction, there must be 1.5 meters of distance between each student, if a student leaves the room during the exam he/she must be accompanied by a chaperone, there must be at least one invigilator for each 25 students, etc. During the May exam season I visited 6 schools in Costa Rica.

      The International Baccalaureate Organization holds the reputation of a rigorous pre-college program. In order to maintain that reputation, it is necessary that its examination process keeps high standards. ‘Unannounced Inspections’ are intended to verify the examination process. They consist of visits to schools where the inspector arrives just few minutes before an exam begins. The inspector’s duty consists on verifying that the conditions of the exam follow the strict IB rules. For instance, all students must face on the same direction, there must be 1.5 meters of distance between each student, if a student leaves the room during the exam he/she must be accompanied by a chaperone, there must be at least one invigilator for each 25 students, etc. During the May exam season I visited 3 schools in three different countries and using three different languages (English, French and Spanish).
