Research Interests

Research Interests
I’ve been studying the dynamic behavior of population systems, from both data-driven and model-based perspectives. In particular, I created a unified data-driven method to efficiently reveal the dynamic topology and learn mathematical models of population systems when a reliable model is not available. This allows us to study the network properties, such as synchrony and clustering. I also constructed an iterative method to find optimal controls for driving ensemble systems, e.g., for pattern formation. With these methods, I’ve studied several cutting-edge applications, numerically and experimentally, which include revealing time-varying topology of oscillatory networks for understanding functional connectivity of circadian cells or social synchronization of groups of mice, designing optimal broadband quantum pulses in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and imaging, devising optimal stimuli for spiking neuron ensembles, and designing optimal dose strategy for treating tumor in cancer chemotherapy.

Teaching Interests

Teaching Interests
In my opinion, the engineering courses share one thing in common, that is, balancing the theoretical support and practical application. Hence, to help students be better prepared for engineer related jobs or research opportunities, the courses in engineering should strengthen both the theoretical background taught in class and the applicability to real-world applications. I have taught two undergraduate courses, MAE 2360 and MAE 4310, and constructed one graduate course on probability theory and stochastic processes. I'm planning to teach control and optimization related courses, such as MAE 5335.

Biography

Biography

Shuo (Linda) Wang is an assistant professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UT Arlington. She obtained her B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Peking University, China; and received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in systems science and mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis. She has been working on mathematical modeling and engineering problems involve massive data and control, and published peer-reviewed journal papers in related topics. She has collaborated with people across fields, such as neuroscientists, biologists, and chemists, applied scientists, to study the underlying nature of complex dynamic networks and reveal the functionality of networks in different fields, from circadian networks to social networks, and further design network controls to achieve some practical tasks.
