Research and Expertise

  • Sia Ardekani

Dr. Ardekani has over 30 years of experience as a transportation researcher and has supervised over 3 million dollars in research projects, including more than 2 million dollars in TxDOT sponsored projects. He has authored or coauthored more than 40 refereed journal publications on traffic flow theory and traffic safety as well as numerous other research and conference publications.Dr. Ardekani's areas of expertise include traffic flow theory, traffic surveillance systems, intelligent transportation systems, managed lane operations, roadway pricing, emergency transportation management, and public transportation design and operations.

Dr. Ardekani has led a number of projects related to calibration of travel time prediction models in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. One such study, conducted for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit, required travel time prediction models for diverting buses from their fixed routes to pick up passengers off route. In another study, he developed an incident management software tool to determine optimum traffic diversion routes around major highway incidents and blockages. The software development entailed extensive calibration of a travel time prediction model as well as incorporation of origin-destination estimation based on link volumes and route choice rules to re-assign the affected traffic to alternative routes.Other projects have included development of expert systems to set pricing strategies for managed lanes in order to achieve optimal performance from those lanes in terms of throughput, speed, fuel consumption, and emissions. As part of another recent study he has also developed a freeway incident rating system to improve freeway incident management and response.
