Biography

Biography

Dr. Sok Ju Kim joined the Department of Modern Languages at The University of Texas at Arlington in January 2014. He earned his BA in English Language and Literature and Teacher Credential (English) at Pusan National University, teaching English as a foreign language at high school in Korea. Dr. Kim earned his MA in Linguistics and Certificate in Applied Linguistics and TESL at San Diego State University and he received his PhD in Linguistics at the University of Kansas. He taught Introductory Linguistics as an instructor (GTA) at the University of Kansas. He has been teaching Korean language, culture, and Korean linguistics at The University of Texas at Arlington since January 2014. He has also been appointed as Coordinator of Korean Program and has served as a faculty advisor of Korean Culture Association at UT Arlington. His research is mainly motivated by how syntactic structure is represented in native speakers’ grammar and by how different/similar heritage and early bilingual speakers’ grammar is from/to native speakers’ grammar. To investigate his research agenda, he does both experimental and empirical studies on Korean syntax and heritage (and L2) Korean acquisition and its grammar. The primary purpose of his research is to strengthen the empirical/theoretical and experimental connections between the areas of research addressed separately within syntax and heritage (and second) language acquisition. His research ultimately aims to explore how to strengthen an analysis of syntactic representations of human language in the perspectives of language acquisition. Currently, he is also collaborating on second language acquisition of phonetics (L1 English or Spanish, L2 Korean).
