Research Interests

Research Interests

My primary research interests are:

1) Inverse problems in health sciences: (a) In the field of medical imaging, I have developed optimal control frameworks for efficient reconstruction of physical properties arising in various imaging modalities such as electrical impedance tomography, current density impedance imaging, photoacoustic tomography and other hybrid imaging modalities that are modeled by partial differential equations (PDE).

(b) In fluid flows, I have used optical flow tracer techniques to determine the fluid velocities. Such a method has applications in motion tracking and cloud motion.

(c) I have developed PDE inverse problem frameworks for optimal control of stochastic processes leading to Liouville and Fokker Planck equations, that model collective motion and traffic flows. Such frameworks are theoretically and computationally very extensive and robust.

(d) I am currently working on using inverse problem frameworks to devise efficient treatments of cancer. Such a process involves modeling the cancer dynamics using PDEs known as quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) and estimating parameters using optimal control techniques.

2) Discontinuous Galerkin schemes for fluid flows- I have developed higher order TVD DG schemes, mainly in the finite element framework, for conservation laws.

3) Shape optimization- I have worked on shape optimization problems related to placement of obstacles to optimize the Dirichlet eigenvalues. Such methods have applications in design of musical instruments and optimal accelerator cavities, building non-resonant structures.

Teaching Interests

Teaching Interests
Imparting the knowledge of mathematics in an efficient way, is an elegant art that requires experience and high quality skill. While the process of reading theorems and proofs in books and papers are important and valuable, the real learning comes from solving mathematical problems, discussing solutions with peers and hands on exercises. This is achieved through classroom coaching, and, thus, the role of a teacher becomes crucial. While teaching, I view my role as a mentor facilitating this process. Through my relatively diverse teaching experience, I have tried my best to create a platform where the process of learning ignites and nurture the passion of students' development, providing help in terms of acquiring proficient knowledge, state-of-the-art techniques, and above all encourage the students.

My primary goal in teaching is not just to enhance the ability to grasp the subject matter. I try to help the students learn to think logically, learn problem-solving methods and techniques, develop a passion for the subject and most importantly express themselves better by helping them improve writing skills because a good collaborative work and progress of the subject requires good communication of one's own thought. In addition, I try to help students see the course material in a global context by requiring them to knit together various concepts of the course and apply them in real applications. This enables students to share their research with people from other fields, leading to development of new ideas.

Hi, I am Souvik Roy. I am an assistant professor at the Department of Mathematics, UTA. I did my Ph.D. from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Centre for Applicable Mathematics, Bangalore, India in 2015. My specializations include partial differential equations (PDE), inverse problems in medical imaging and health sciences, with particular applications in detection and treatment of cancer.
