Research Interests

Research Interests
Quevedo's research investigates the media of drawing, painting and sculpture through the application of spatial theory and experimentation in materials. His current research involves the nature of creative development through methodologies of drawing and making. This research comes back to inform the studio environment particularly in the aspect of "play" or experimentation in the design studio. Creative invention sets the stage for the studio if the professor is equally engaged in the process as an active member of the design process.

Drawing as a mechanism for generative design is incorporated in the creative activities which have resulted in both physical analog drawings, hybrid drawings, watercolors, plaster paintings and sculptures. This alternative means of creative activity is an intrinsic mechanism for which an architecture can be explored without the confines of building. Drawings act as a device to explore architectural ideas, informing built work as well as theoretical and abstraction. Through painting, the idea of surface and material become abstractions of plan, facade and section compositions, exploring the tactile qualities of the media such as plaster and pigments, which are derived from the building industry. Quevedo's architectural drawings have shown in numerous exhibitions most notably in American Perspectives: from Classic to Contemporary at the Tachoban Foundation Museum for Architectural Drawing in Berlin, Germany; numerous Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation competitions; the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture National Conference. His art work has exhibited in regional and local competitions including the Texas & Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition, ART 241, Artspace111, the New Texas Talent XXIV, and Hecho en Dallas.

Recent research has sought to augment the role of teaching by understanding the larger history of architectural education by the writing of the History of the School of Architecture with Professors Todd Hamilton and Lee Wright. This project involved looking at the early beginning of the program from a two year drafting program to its evolution into the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs. A significant portion of the manuscript focused on the student projects within the varying and diverse studios throughout the School's long and rich history. This design history revealed the high standards of theory, craft and spatial exploration. This project was made possible from a grant though the College, resulting in a limited printed book and exhibition in collaboration with the School of Planning and Public Affairs (SUPA) with Professors Enid Avidson and Rod Hissong.
