      Service Learning Project
Gustavo Garriga-Garcia, This student group in my Chem 4313 (Metabolism and Regulation) class worked on a “service learning (SL)” project. SL project detail: Students, in consultation with me, selected a health related topic ("Sugar substitutes: Health controversy over perceived benefits") related to the class subject materials, studied up to date information on the topic and reviewed recent research literatures and prepared a lesson plan (power point slides, 1 hr. presentations) suitable for high school students. They coordinated with a high school teacher in Arlington-ISD and presented their 1 hr lesson plan in class (high school students). They also took a feedback from the high school student about their presentation. At the end, each participating student in this SL project independently wrote a 10-page reflection article/term paper describing their SL-topic, their studies/preparation and summarized their experience on high school presentation and visit. They provided me the articles, presentation slides and the term paper, which I graded.

      Service Learning Project
This student group in my Chem 4313 (Metabolism and Regulation) class worked on a “service learning (SL)” project. SL project detail: Students, in consultation with me, selected a health related topic related to the class subject materials, studied up to date information on the topic and reviewed recent research literatures and prepared a lesson plan (power point slides, 1 hr. presentations) suitable for high school students. They coordinated with a high school teacher in DFW metroplex and presented their 1 hr lesson plan in class (high school students).

(Course Id: 107944 | Servlearn Desc: The SL project was optional. In this class, students were asked to write either a term paper on a topic related to the class or exercise a Service Leaning project. This accounts for their 10 % grade. Several group of students participated in the SL-project and presented their SL-project in nearby high schools. SL project details Since 2009 (almost every fall semester), I have integrated SL activities in my classes (Metabolism and regulation, Biochemical genetics course) as a way to outreach K-12 students, teacher, and community about basic biochemical and biomedical sciences and their relevance to human health and disease. I am currently a Service Learning faculty fellow at UTA and served once earlier. Typical Service Learning project format: a) Students (in a group of 3), in consultation with me, select a health related topic (for example “Artificial sweetener and its health impacts", “Endocrine disruptors, health and environment” , “Smoking and human health”, “Drug addiction and health”, “Alcohol addiction and health”, "Diabetes", "Cardiovascular disease", etc) related to the class subject materials. b) Students study current information on the topic through journals, review recent research literature, and prepare a lesson plan (power point slides, 1 hour presentation) suitable for high school students. They also prepare a poster on the same. c) Students coordinate with a high school teacher (preferably 11th or 12th grade science class) in Arlington ISD and DFW area, and arrange a visit to the high school. Students present their 1 hour lesson plans in a class in high school. These classes are deigned to have more interactions with class students/teachers, exchange ideas and enhance their learning. At the end, our students take a feedback survey from the high school students in the class, about the class presentation and how much they learned. d) Assessment (students write a reflection paper): At the end, each participating student (my UTA student) in this SL project, independently writes a 10 page reflection article/term paper describing their SL-topic, their studies/preparation, summarized their experience and views on high school presentation and visit. They submit to me the articles (studied and used), presentation slides and the reflection term paper, which I use for grading. e) Overall outcome of these SL activities are many fold: Students from my class (UTA) learn how to read, write, present, work as a team, reach out to community, and interact with high school students and their teachers. Most importantly, they learn how to transmit their knowledge to younger students beyond their classroom learning. On the other hand, high school students are exposed to college students and exposed to health related advanced topics. Often they ask many questions to our students about college life etc. and eventually they are encouraged to pursue their careers in science and medicine. Students (my students at UTA) initially are not very happy to get involved in the SL-projects. However eventually many students do participate. At the end, most participating student acknowledge that they enjoyed the SL-project and they have a glowing experience as reflected in their SL-reflection paper. Some examples of the service learning projects are given under "directed student supervision" sections. I could not list all of them, as there are many over the years. I could not attach the reflection papers here because of technical reason (student information present), but I would be happy to share if someone would like to read them. Interesting and encouraging comments. These projects could be tedious and time consuming. However, at the end, I as well as the students do feel it is worthwhile and rewarding. I plan to continue to outreach the students and community via integration of service learning in my classes, in the long run. )

Service to the Community

Service to the Community

    • 2009 to  Present
Faculty Advisor for Service Learning Projects integrated in my courses
      UT Arlington - Service Learning
      V. Community outreach through Service Learning (2009-present, every year at least one semester) Since 2009 (almost every fall semester), I have integrated SL activities in my classes (Metabolism and regulation, Biochemical genetics course) as a way to outreach K-12 students, teacher, and community about basic biochemical and biomedical sciences and their relevance to human health and disease. I an currently a Service Learning faculty fellow at UTA and served once earlier. Typical Service Learning project format: a) Students (in a group of 3), in consultation with me, select a health related topic (for example “Artificial sweetener and its health impacts", “Endocrine disruptors, health and environment” , “Smoking and human health”, “Drug addiction and health”, “Alcohol addiction and health”, Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, etc) related to the class subject materials. b) Students study up to date information on the topic, review recent research literatures, and prepare a lesson plan (power point slides, 1 hr presentation) suitable for high school students. They also prepare a poster on the same. c) Students coordinate with a high school teacher (preferably 11th or 12th grade science class) in Arlington ISD and DFW area, and arrange a visit to the high school. Students present their 1 hr lesson plan in a class in high school. On the other hands, high school students are exposed to college students and exposed to health related advanced topics. Often they ask many questions to our students about college life etc. and eventually they are encouraged to pursue their careers in science and medicine. I have been exercising this for almost 10 years at varying pace. Students initially are not very happy to get involved in the SL-projects. However eventually many students do participate. At the end, most participating student acknowledge that they enjoyed the SL-project and they have a glowing experience as reflected in their SL-reflection paper. I could not attach those reflection papers here because of a technical reason, but I would happy to share if someone would like to read them. These projects could be tedious and time consuming. However, at the end, I as well as the students do feel it is worthy and rewarding. I do plan to continue to outreach the students and community via integration of service learning in my classes, in the long run.
