Research and Expertise

  • Research Interest
Dr. Chen's research utilizes statistical perspectives to create new methodologies for operations research problems appearing in engineering and science.  She has expertise in the design of experiments, statistical modeling, and data mining, particularly for computer experiments and stochastic optimization.  She has studied applications in inventory forecasting, airline optimization, water reservoir networks, wastewater treatment, and air quality.  Through her statistics-based approach, she has developed computationally-tractable methods for stochastic dynamic programming, airline planning, and environmental decision-making.  Her methods have provided solutions to previously unsolvable problems.
  • Multi-Stage Stochastic Decision-Making
One area of expertise lies with the development of techniques to solve high-dimensional continuous-state stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) by employing DACE methods for experimental design and statistical modeling (DACE/SDP).  Methods for experimental design include orthogonal arrays, Latin hypercubes, and number-theoretic methods (a.k.a., low-discrepancy sequences).  Methods for statistical modeling include multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), kriging, artificial neural networks, and support vector regression.  This work evolved out of a collaboration between Christine Shoemaker and David Ruppert (both at Cornell U) and was enhanced by a collaboration with Cristiano Cervellera (National Research Council of Italy) and Riccardo Zoppoli (U of Genoa, Italy).  Current projects are conducted under UT-Arlington's Center for Stochastic Modeling, Optimization, & Statistics, for which Dr. Chen is Director.  New research developments include versions of MARS (Tsai and Chen 2005) that enable easier implementation in SDP, a parallel computing version of MARS (Tsai et al. 2005), and a comparison of MARS and neural networks (Cervellera et al. 2007).  Applications include a 20-dimensional wastewater treatment system (Tsai et al. 2004), a 30-dimensional water reservoir network (Cervellera et al. 2006), and a very high dimensional (> 500) ozone pollution problem (Yang et al. 2007, Yang et al. 2009).  Joint work with UTA/COSMOS collegues Jay Rosenberger and Seoung Bum Kim have led to generalizations of this DACE/SDP approach for airline revenue management (Siddappa et al. 2007, 2008), stochastic programming for airline fleet assignment (Pilla et al. 2008) and simulation-optimization for nurse assignment (Sundaramoorthi et al. 2009).
